I never know what to do with myself on Holy Saturday–and I think that’s the point.

For it is on this day that we remember that Jesus completes the perfect and holy sabbath rest, the sabbath rest of death. From Good Friday evening to Saturday evening, Jesus keeps Sabbath by resting completely in the tomb, a rest that mimics and fulfills his own rest on the first Sabbath, the 7th day of creation (Genesis 2:2-3).

In our Gospel text, we see Joseph of Arimathea wrapping the body of Jesus for burial in a borrowed tomb. Mary and Mary keep watch. So too this day we keep watch, keep vigil, with Good Friday sorrow and Resurrection hope.
